Holistic Approaches to Dental Health: Natural Ways to Heal Your Teeth and Gums
For years, I believed I was doomed to face the same dental issues as my parents. It seemed like tooth problems ran in the family, and I assumed that was just my fate. However, recent experiences at the dentist made me question this belief.
Every time I visited my dentist for a checkup, I encountered new dental problems. When I asked my dentist for solutions to heal my teeth and gums, the response was always the same: fluoride toothpaste and prevention. But what about addressing existing issues without resorting to invasive treatments like root canals?
I strongly believe the body has the ability to heal itself, especially when given the right conditions and proper tools. The mouth is a window to the rest of the body, and when the mouth’s microbiome is out of balance, it can impact the gut, immune system, and overall health. So, I started researching holistic ways to heal my teeth and gums.
Holistic Toothpaste Options
One of the first things I learned is that many holistic dental care routines incorporate fluoride-free toothpaste. In addition to fluoride-free options, there are toothpastes containing nano-hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring mineral found in teeth and bones. These particles help remineralize the enamel, filling in cracks and holes, which may help prevent cavities and reduce tooth sensitivity.
Another great option is to make your own toothpaste using bentonite clay, distilled water, and essential oils. Bentonite clay helps neutralize acids and remineralizes teeth, supporting overall oral health.
Natural Mouthwash Alternatives
I’ve replaced conventional mouthwash with a simple 1:1 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water, which I rinse with at night. While hydrogen peroxide can be drying, I’ve found that using it once a day is effective without irritation. Also note that prolonged, frequent use could lead to enamel erosion. This could be prevented by using for the mixture for a week once every 3-4 months. For those looking for an alternative, ozonated pulling oil has gained attention in the holistic health community, although there’s limited clinical research supporting its benefits.
The Benefits of Tongue Scraping
Tongue scraping is another valuable addition to a holistic dental routine. A study on Ayurvedic practices found that tongue cleaning can improve digestive health and overall oral well-being. Regularly scraping your tongue helps remove bacteria and toxins that could negatively impact your gums and teeth. I use a stainless steel tongue scraper twice a day, once in the morning and again before bed.
Mouth Taping for Improved Oral Health
Mouth taping has recently gained popularity, especially on social media platforms like TikTok. The concept is simple: when you sleep with your mouth open, the air dries out your mouth and promotes an environment that encourages tooth decay and gum disease. While mouth taping can help improve oral health by preventing dry mouth during sleep, it’s not without its risks, including discomfort and potential breathing issues. I personally use a small vertical strip of tape just on the middle of my mouth to keep my mouth closed while sleeping. This method might be a more comfortable alternative than taping the entire mouth shut.
What Is a Biological Dentist?
A biological dentist (also called a holistic or integrative dentist) focuses on the relationship between oral health and overall well-being. Find a biological dentist near you here. These professionals prioritize non-toxic materials—such as mercury-free fillings—and aim to minimize harmful substances used in traditional dentistry. Biological dentists also emphasize natural, minimally invasive treatments that support your body’s balance. For anyone seeking a holistic approach to dental health, a biological dentist is an excellent option.
Conclusion: Embracing Holistic Dental Care
With these holistic alternatives to conventional dental care, I’ve found new ways to support my oral health without relying on harsh chemicals or invasive procedures. If you’re looking to make the shift to a more natural approach to dental health, these options might be worth considering.
