Digital Detox: Reclaiming Your Time from Social Media

It’s not me. It’s definitely you!

Why It’s Time for a Social Media Fast: Reclaiming Our Time and Connection

We’ve all been there: scrolling mindlessly, getting lost in the endless abyss of social media. You know the drill—time slips away, and you find yourself staring at your phone, unaware of the life happening right around you.

Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic. But I can’t be the only one who feels this way sometimes, right? While I’ve gotten better at managing my time on social media, especially when my kids are around, the reality is that scrolling isn’t nearly as constructive as it is destructive. The constant stream of chaos, fear, and negativity shared on my feeds often leaves me drained.

So, it’s time for a reset. A social media fast.

The Addiction Behind the Screen

Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to put the phone down? It’s not just you. Social media apps are engineered to be addicting. They’re designed to give users instant gratification by triggering the release of dopamine—the same “feel good” chemical that fuels addiction. This feedback loop keeps us coming back for more, similar to how a drug addict craves their next hit. Crazy, right? 🤯

These apps are also built with unpredictability, like a slot machine, making it hard for users to stop. We check for the next update, the next “like,” the next comment, not knowing when it will come but hoping it’s soon. This constant uncertainty can hook us for hours.

As we turn to social media to escape stress, loneliness, or boredom, we create a vicious cycle. Instead of solving these issues, we end up feeling even more isolated, stressed, and disconnected from reality. And let’s not even talk about the FOMO (fear of missing out) that plagues us when we see everyone else living their best lives online.

The Startling Numbers Behind Screen Time

The statistics are eye-opening:

  • Young adults (16-24) spend around 6 hours a day on smartphones.
  • Tweens (8-12 years old) average between 4.5 – 6 hours of screen time daily.

If these numbers don’t make you think, I don’t know what will.

So, what can we do about it? How do we take back control of our time and attention?

Steps to a Digital Detox

  1. Replace the Scrolling Habit: Try something different, like reading a physical book, taking a walk, or getting creative. Engaging in these activities can help you reconnect with the world around you.
  2. Try a Digital Detox or Fast: It could be a weekend, a week, or even longer. Disconnect from social media entirely to focus on real-life relationships, enjoy nature, and engage in non-digital activities.
  3. Practice Being Present: Ground yourself in the present moment by using all five senses. What can you smell, touch, taste, see, and hear right now? This simple practice brings you back to reality and keeps your mind focused on what’s in front of you.
  4. Set Boundaries for Tech Use: Be the example for healthy tech habits. Whether it’s in your home, workplace, or school, model how to use technology intentionally and mindfully. The benefits will ripple out and impact those around you.
  5. Consume News on Your Terms: I’ve cut down on mindlessly scrolling through news feeds. Instead, I’ve found a couple of trusted sources that deliver headlines straight to my inbox. One is The Loop (daily emails), and another is The Pour Over (Wednesdays and Fridays). I love the biblical perspective they bring to news coverage, offering a more thoughtful, intentional approach to staying informed.

Reconnecting with What Matters

While it might feel impossible to step away from the digital world, it’s essential to remember that we were created for physical connection. Technology promises to connect us globally, but I believe it often deters us from the deeper, more meaningful relationships we crave. This is especially true for younger generations, whose development stages can be affected negatively by constant digital interaction.

It’s time to find balance—embracing technology in ways that enhance our lives rather than distract from them. And as for me, I’m taking a break from social media, but I won’t stop sharing my journey. You can expect a new blog post every Wednesday at 7pm CST (and sometimes bonus posts on Fridays). This is how I plan to use technology constructively, instead of destructively.

Are you ready to join me in taking a break from social media? It’s not about quitting technology altogether—it’s about using it intentionally. Let’s commit to a healthier relationship with our screens and use the extra time to reconnect with ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us.
